Valentine's Day "Flash Mob"... ONE BILLION RISING!

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. A day set aside to recognize and celebrate love. Love between couples, friends, kids, parents, etc.  It is also a day for... wait for it... activism. You may associate the day more with hearts and flowers than with social and political activism aimed at ending violence against women, but perhaps that will change. And hey... if you are a Valentine's Day "hater" this may make you love the day. If you have never heard of the VDay movement, Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues, or 1Billion Rising PLEASE read about it. Click HERE to learn about VDay.

About One Billion Rising

ONE IN THREE WOMEN ON THE PLANET WILL BE RAPED OR BEATEN IN HER LIFETIME.
ONE BILLION WOMEN VIOLATED IS AN ATROCITY
ONE BILLION WOMEN DANCING IS A REVOLUTION

On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, 14 February 2013, we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. ONE BILLION RISING will move the earth, activating women and men across every country. V-Day wants the world to see our collective strength, our numbers, our solidarity across borders.
What does ONE BILLION look like? On 14 February 2013, it will look like a REVOLUTION.

ONE BILLION RISING IS:
A global strike
An invitation to dance
A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends
An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers
A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given
A new time and a new way of being

I am proud and excited to share that Charlotte, NC is partnering with Safe Alliance and hosting a local event:

I participated (acted in) in The Vagina Monologues for 2 years in college, and the entire experience was one of the best, most enlightening, most powerful of my life (that is not an exaggeration). I've seen what can happen when people unify for a cause. Some people will laugh at you. Many will not "get it" and some will even make fun of you (because it is easier to justify doing nothing that way). But... you know what else happens... the world can and does change. If you are skeptical, sitting there wondering what "dancing" can do, then I encourage you to think about it. What would it do, if you were a survivor surrounded by people who supported you? What would it do if you were a little girl half way across the globe?  If someone showed you a video of millions of women and men you've never met standing on their feet, smiling, and dancing in support of you? What would it do if you were a politician? To see millions of voters exercising their right to assemble, their right to free speech, their passion? Would it make you think about your stance on "Women's Issues"? It may. What would it do, if you were the mother of a little girl who had her whole uncertain life ahead of her? Would it encourage you? Make you feel strong? Supported? Heard? Loved? Understood? I bet it would. There are some who will not be able to make the event because of work, school, children, because they live in a town w/o an official event, etc. You can share this post, spread the word, learn more, donate to the cause, or check out the IN ADDITION section of THIS page. There are some of you though who don't want to be bothered, who don't want the inconvenience, who would be embarrassed to do something out of your comfort zone. To you I say this...

HAPPY VDAY, MAMACITAS!!!! I hope to see you all at Freedom Park tomorrow! If not... I hope to see your FB posts, Instagrams, and Tweets in support #1billionrising, #reasontorise, and @vday (and @modafresca to share with me)! Let's do this!!!

If you'd like to learn the dance, go to YouTube and search One Billion Rising. There are numerous tutorials. If you don't have time to learn the dance, please do NOT let that stop you from coming out in support of the cause.

If you are still not convinced, you are sick of listening to me, or you just don't "get it"... check this 2 minute video out. It's beautiful.
